Gatwick is the closest major airport to Worthing at around 18 miles, and the drive usually takes 25 to 40 minutes. Here is how to plan the timing, pick the right terminal and avoid the common mistakes.

Gatwick is the airport most people in Worthing use, and for good reason: it is roughly 18 miles from the town centre, the drive usually takes somewhere between 25 and 40 minutes, and it serves short-haul routes across Europe and beyond. But the journey still goes wrong for people, usually for one of four reasons. Here is how to avoid all of them.

How long does Worthing to Gatwick actually take?

Typically 25 to 40 minutes. The route runs from Worthing via the A27 and the A24 up to the M23, then into the airport. That range is wide because traffic on the A27 and around the A24/A27 junction at Findon varies enormously by time of day.

The practical implications:

  • Weekday mornings between roughly 7:30am and 9:15am are the slowest window on the A27 corridor.
  • Saturday mornings in summer, when holiday traffic meets normal weekend traffic, can also be heavy.
  • Overnight and early morning, the road is usually clear and you will be at the terminal close to the 25-minute end.
  • Roadworks on the A27 or A24 are common. They rarely close the road, but they change your timing.

Which Gatwick terminal do you need?

Gatwick has a North Terminal and a South Terminal, and they are a short transit ride apart. Airlines are allocated to terminals, and getting it wrong means a shuttle train with your luggage before you have even checked in.

Check your terminal on your booking confirmation rather than assuming, because airlines do move between terminals. If you tell your taxi company your flight number, they can confirm the terminal with you when the booking is made, which removes the risk entirely.

How early should you leave Worthing?

Work backwards from your airline's check-in closing time, not from your departure time. As a rough guide:

Flight typeTypical check-in guidanceSuggested pickup from Worthing
Short-haul, hand luggage onlyArrive about 2 hours before departure3 hours before departure
Short-haul with bagsArrive about 2 hours before departure3 to 3.25 hours before
Long-haul from GatwickArrive about 3 hours before departure4 hours before

The four mistakes people make

  1. Booking a taxi for the flight time rather than working back from check-in. A 7am flight means leaving Worthing around 4am, not 6am.
  2. Not giving the flight number. Your driver cannot monitor a flight they do not know about, and on a return journey that is exactly how a delayed landing turns into a long wait.
  3. Forgetting the luggage. Two people with four large cases and two cabin bags need a bigger vehicle than a saloon, and it is much easier to assign one at the time of booking.
  4. Leaving the return transfer until landing. Arrivals halls at busy times mean taxi ranks fill quickly. Pre-booking means a car against your name.

Coming home: the return transfer

The return leg is where flight monitoring earns its keep. Give your taxi company the inbound flight number when you book and they can follow the flight, adjusting the pickup to your actual landing time rather than your scheduled one. That matters most on the late flights, when a two-hour delay at 11pm leaves you with very few options.

If you would rather not navigate an unfamiliar arrivals hall, ask for a meet and greet. The driver waits inside with your name on a board, helps with the bags and walks you to the car. It is particularly worth it for late-night landings and for anyone travelling with children.

Alternative airports worth knowing about

If your route is served from elsewhere, the journey times from Worthing are noticeably longer, and it is worth building that into your plans:

  • Heathrow — around 50 to 70 minutes, all terminals served
  • Luton — roughly 80 miles, typically 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Stansted — in Essex, roughly 90 miles, usually 2 to 2.5 hours

For those airports the case for a direct transfer rather than public transport is stronger, because the rail alternatives involve changes in London with luggage.
